Taipei, Taiwan – Winbond Electronics Corporation ("Winbond") today (19th) received the 2024 National Sustainable Development Award, organized by the National Development Council under the Executive Yuan, in recognition of its outstanding achievements and continuous commitment in environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic development. This accolade highlights the company's leadership in sustainable development. Following the Practical Guide for Integrating SDGs into Corporate Reporting, jointly issued by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the United Nations, Winbond has identified relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through three key steps and nine actions, aligning its sustainability strategies and action plans accordingly. Winbond regularly measures and evaluates its performance, integrating and reporting sustainability initiatives to ensure progress, expand its positive social impact, and demonstrate its firm commitment to achieving the SDGs.
As a global leader in semiconductor memory solutions, Winbond has been pioneering innovation in Serial NOR Flash since 2001. Compared to Parallel Flash, with comparative performance, Serial NOR Flash has a much smaller footprint and significantly reduces carbon emissions per unit produced. This innovation reflects Winbond's balance between technological development and environmental protection. Additionally, Winbond actively implements comprehensive carbon reduction strategies, covering green procurement, R&D innovation, and green manufacturing. Since 2006, Winbond has reduced approximately 2.28 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions — equal to the annual carbon absorption of 5,907 Daan Forest Parks. By the end of 2024, Winbond’s Board of Directors approved renewable energy investments totaling NT$955 million. By 2025, Winbond expects to procure or generate 67 million kWh of renewable energy, covering 8-10% of its total electricity consumption. The company has also secured a 30-year renewable energy purchase agreement guaranteeing an annual supply of 160 million kWh. As the partnered solar and offshore wind projects come online, the proportion of renewable energy in its energy mix will increase. On the supply chain front, Winbond has collaborated with 13 partners, investing over NT$200 million to reduce process gas emissions, conserve electricity and water, and promote greenhouse gas inventory management, aiming to cut 5,866 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent by 2025.
Beyond manufacturing efforts, Winbond actively promotes nature-based carbon removal strategies. The company has planted 9,000 trees at its Kaohsiung facility and in Chiayi, projected to remove 1,380 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent. Recently, Winbond secured a natural carbon sink project in Sanxing Township, Yilan County, committing to plant 33,000 trees. It also continues its Theaceae species conservation and breeding program, having collected and cultivated 27 camellia species, nine of which are listed in the International Red List for conservation. Additionally, Winbond has invested in the world’s largest blue carbon project, acquiring 13,500 metric tons of voluntary carbon credits from nine countries across Asia and Africa. Winbond also fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace culture. Women hold 27% of its board seats, while foreign executives account for 17% of its senior management, reflecting organizational diversity and global leadership. The company has been listed on the High Pay 100 Index for eight consecutive years. Since 2011, it has offered employees a monthly childcare allowance of NT$6,000 per child until the age of four, attracting global talent to advance a sustainable future together.
Looking ahead, Winbond will continue focusing on technological innovation, leveraging the collective wisdom and efforts of its employees to advance low-carbon technologies and sustainable products. It will strengthen supply chain partnerships, expand environmental and social impact, and collaborate with stakeholders to achieve more comprehensive sustainable development plans. Winbond is committed to continuously optimizing its sustainability business model, striving toward net-zero emissions by 2050, and creating a better future for the planet and future generations, contributing to global sustainable development.
