Advancing Circular Economy by Returning Waste to the Value Cycle

Putting Circular Economy into Practice Through Systems and Action
When waste is no longer treated as the end of the line but is reintegrated into production processes to create value, the circular economy truly takes shape. Winbond announced that, in 2026, all of its manufacturing sites achieved UL 2799 Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) Platinum certification. This milestone signifies that Winbond has established a stable and third-party-verifiable management system for waste reduction, segregation, and resource recovery, and continues to advance toward internationally recognized sustainability standards through practical and consistent actions.UL 2799 is an internationally recognized third-party verification standard that emphasizes not only performance outcomes, but also transparency and effectiveness in waste stream management. Through source reduction, recycling, reuse, and energy-beneficial treatment, Winbond transforms waste into reusable resources while effectively reducing final landfill disposal. This achievement represents the cumulative result of years of continuous process review, management optimization, and disciplined execution.

Building a Strong Foundation Through Institutionalized Management
From a management perspective, Winbond has progressively established comprehensive waste management procedures, clearly defining roles and responsibilities across departments. Environmental responsibility and resource circulation awareness are reinforced through new employee orientation, on-the-job training, and internal communications, encouraging broad employee participation. At the same time, management systems are implemented to ensure proper retention of operational records and regulatory documentation, supporting traceability and verification. Winbond also conducts regular audits of waste treatment contractors, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and management practices continue to improve. To ensure performance can be effectively measured and reviewed, Winbond has established waste management targets, including indicators such as waste generated per unit of production capacity and recycling rates. These metrics enable systematic monitoring of waste generation trends and ongoing evaluation of reuse feasibility.

Turning Waste into Part of the Production Process
In practical implementation, Winbond collaborates with partners to analyze and develop waste reuse opportunities. For example, spent sulfuric acid generated during manufacturing processes is regenerated into industrial-grade sulfuric acid and reused within internal utility systems. This approach allows resources to be effectively reused within existing processes, enhancing overall resource utilization efficiency.

Circular Economy Beyond the Factory, Reaching into Schools
Winbond also extends circular economy thinking across its value chain. In 2025, Winbond partnered with ChipMOS Technologies to transform process-generated waste resources into sustainable materials used to manufacture basketballs. Together, the companies organized the “Silicon Hand in Hand, Sustainable Basketball” donation program, donating these basketballs to 20 rural elementary schools in Tainan City and Kaohsiung City.Through tangible action, Winbond brings circular economy and sustainability concepts into school communities, demonstrating concrete collaboration between enterprises and the education sector. This initiative underscores that sustainability is not only a management system, but something that can be seen, used, and experienced.

Maintaining Balance Between Operations and the Environment
Waste management is an integral part of manufacturing operations. Winbond carefully reviews each stage of its processes, continuously strengthening source reduction, internal recycling, and compliant external treatment mechanisms. While ensuring regulatory compliance and environmental safety, the company remains committed to improving resource efficiency.Aligned with its corporate sustainability strategy, Winbond will continue to periodically review and refine its waste management processes and performance, closely monitor domestic and international sustainability trends and stakeholder expectations, and steadily deepen the implementation of circular economy practices while maintaining a balance between operational stability and environmental responsibility.
